Consistent devotion to Jesus and to the needs of others displays the beauty of God’s offer of grace.  How do we pursue that devotion while wisely engaging a culture that so ardently rejects Jesus?   The Apostle Paul provides an answer in his letter to Titus.

A new equipping class on Titus begins Sunday, March 5.  Led by Dr. Barry Davis and Matthew Jensen, 10:45 a.m. in Room 314.

Team members with Haitian children

Glenwood’s outreach strategy is to be involved in sending those called to serve on a long term basis, to assist the development of national missionaries and leaders and to send short term Global Outreach (GO) Teams to these areas. Glenwood has been involved in Haiti for many years and is eager to support ministry in any number of ways.  A team of ten have gone to Port-au-Prince this last week to help in the construction of two projects, a home near STEP and the ongoing construction of a new academic building at STEP itself.  Check back for team updates as we receive them.

guys in the truck

Hello once again!

The guys woke up early to play basketball with a bunch of Haitians at a nearby school. That was great. Basketball is an American sport so we had our honor to defend! Unfortunately, we got creamed. It was fun playing a competitive game with them though. Meanwhile, Lauren convinced Carlie to Zumba with her.

Gathering for the key ceremony

Hi!

The house was finished today. It went surprisingly quick and looks great!

Wawa and some others from STEP performed the 'Key Ceremony' for the family. There was a toast, some memorable and sweet words were said, and all the girls were crying. It was truly amazing to watch. This family had no hope of ever building a real house. They spend all they have to feed and educate their 5 daughters. This house, small and cramped by our standards, is a monument to the way God provides for His children.

Hello!

Today, we laid the concrete floor for the house. We passed the concrete in buckets for a few hours. After we finished, the only thing left is to put the roof on! This building has gone up very quickly!

The team at the work site, selfie style

Hello!

Thank you all for your prayers!

Today we took a break from working on the house to travel to the school in Merger. Every face we saw was encouraging and we loved seeing every one of them! Team members were able to meet their sponsored kids. They were all so happy to see each other.

Team members with Haitian children

Bonswa! (Unless it's not the evening. Then it would be 'bonjou!')

Day 4 was a success! We arrived at the work site bright and early to finish the walls and pour concrete beams. The work went quickly and everyone on the team worked harder than ever to communicate with the Haitian workers. Immersing yourself in a culture and surrounding yourself with people who speak the language really does help you to learn and retain key phrases to better phrases.

Haitian workers and team working

Bonswa!

Today was the first day we were on the work site. We are all exhausted, but are extremely satisfied with the day. The Haitians were at the top of their game, and I think we were able to be very helpful. We finished almost all of the masonry in one day, which hasn't happened in quite a while.

Very few Haitians spoke English, which gave us an excellent opportunity to practice our Creole! We butchered and slaughtered nearly every phrase and word, but we could tell they appreciated our efforts.

team members with church going kids in haiti

Hello!

We started the day off bright and early to leave for church at 7:00am. Mason and Johnny Filipe drove us and 7 STEP students. The 45 minute drive gave us a chance to ask lots of questions and interact with the students. The church we visited was planted about a year and a half ago by a STEP student. It's amazing to see God working in here.

We stumbled through humming along to songs we didn't know or understand, but were very excited when we heard the tune to 10,000 reasons! It was satisfying to participate in the worship with them.

team members at airport

Hello!  Thank you for all your prayers! Due to God's grace and excellent airline pilots, we arrived safe and sound.

It has been a long day for all of us. We started at PDX the evening of the 3rd. After an amazing send-off and the miracle of getting through security without any bumps, we boarded our first flight.

It was the longest flight many of us had ever been on, but we have so much to be thankful for. We landed in JFK at 6am EST and got some much needed food. Three hours later, we boarded our flight to Haiti!
