Haiti G.O. Team June 2017 Day 2
There is something satisfying about seeing a person doing the thing that they are skilled at. Even after a weekend in which we got six hours of sleep in 48 hours, the men were up before the crack of dawn to begin work in earnest on the new STEP seminary building. I wandered and I marveled as each man set to a task. Each task dependent on the man before him. Well-worn tool belts hung from their waists and every time they dug for a tool they never broke eye contact with their task. I’m sure they could have done the work in the dark if necessary.
Building materials were routed, countersunk, shimmed, cross-cut, hung flush and I’m sure many other terms about which I know nothing. What I do know is that they are skilled, willing servants as concerned about the man next to them as they are to the task at hand. We all have different skills and talents but it is a pleasure to see a group of men working so comfortably in theirs. The quality of their work will endure for ages, I’m sure. The benefits to students and future students will be countless.
