We live in interesting times. Within the span of a few short years many of us have come to expect that everything in our lives should be visually documented. We carry around video and still cameras in our pockets and deposit those images into a digital holding tank everyone has access to.  It’s almost as if if no one saw it, it didn’t happen. Ironic words from someone that creates some of those videos for a living.

Tom using a saw

The word of the day is “Routine.” Not as in “Average” but as in “Consistent.”  It’s the stage of a trip when a new normal takes hold and you slide into a rhythm.  Schedules are set and expectations of those schedules are met.  Everyone’s up at the same time (really early, by the way).  Everyone’s done with breakfast at the same time (except for “one guy” still nursing his cup of coffee with sleep in his eyes).  The walk to the job site is familiar.  Each man slips easily into his work role and the work is completed.  The same rhythm happens at the end of the day, but in reverse.  Work, walk

The new STEP building

There is something satisfying about seeing a person doing the thing that they are skilled at.  Even after a weekend in which we got six hours of sleep in 48 hours, the men were up before the crack of dawn to begin work in earnest on the new STEP seminary building.  I wandered and I marveled as each man set to a task.  Each task dependent on the man before him.  Well-worn tool belts hung from their waists and every time they dug for a tool they never broke eye contact with their task.  I’m sure they could have done the work in the dark if necessary.
